Quality Enhancement Support Scheme

Department of Social Sciences Experiential Learning Quality Enhancement Support Scheme

Background

Ever-changing technology has altered not only our life-style, but also the way of teaching and learning. In recent years, VR technology has been adopted in teaching engineering and science subjects. This offers students learning-by-doing experience and allows students to apply knowledge in real-life situations. In this way, it makes learning more interesting and helps enhance students' skill sets in problem-solving and decision-making. Social sciences are a wide-ranging subject built upon scientific ways to study social relationships and human society, particularly the relationship among individuals within a society. To make the best use of technology and learning resources to encourage creative and innovative ways to enhance learning effectiveness, a 3-year project, “Learning Effectiveness Enhancement through Virtual Reality and Co-Curricular Activities Engagement”, which is funded by the Quality Enhancement Support Scheme (QESS) from the Education Bureau (EDB), has been carried out.

Project Summary

The HKMU is committed to make the best use of technology to encourage innovative ways to enhance learning effectiveness. Virtual Reality (VR) technology allows students to apply knowledge in real-life situations which makes learning more interesting. This project has developed several VR videos and instructional materials for teaching social sciences courses. This project also aims to strengthen the relationship between HKMU and the local community through service learning, which facilitates students' achievement of curricular learning outcomes while meeting the needs of the community. Structured reflection activities centered on student experiences create additional opportunities for the faculty to guide student learning.
